In late 2024, Malaysia's Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) began rejecting batches of MyInvois submissions that contained UDF validation errors, missing serial numbers, or timestamp mismatches. Worse: repeat offenders now face penalties. But here's the problem most accountants and finance teams don't realize—your accounting software might be marking an invoice as 'submitted' when LHDN has actually rejected it at the API layer. We tested four platforms that claim MyInvois support: Xero, Zoho Books, Wave, and Orin. We submitted the same three-invoice batch from a test company (SST-registered, two service lines, one mixed-rate scenario) and watched where validation actually happened. The results explain why some teams sail through audits and others discover compliance gaps months later. What 'real-time LHDN validation' actually means in the spec MyInvois is not just an invoice format. It's a live submission API. When you hit 'submit' in your accounting software, your invoice travels to LHDN's servers, where it's checked against: UDF (User-Defined Field) mapping: Your software must translate your invoice line items into LHDN's exact classification schema. A service invoice needs the right UDF code. Get it wrong, and LHDN rejects the batch silently. Serial number sequences: LHDN tracks your invoice number sequence. If you skip numbers or submit them out of order, the system flags it. This is where spreadsheet-based workarounds fail. Timestamp alignment: Your invoice date must fall within a valid window. Post-dated or heavily backdated invoices trigger rejections. SST/GST matching: If your invoice claims SST, the line items must be classified as taxable. Mismatches are caught in real-time. NPWP validation: Both your NPWP and the buyer's must be valid and formatted correctly. Real-time validation means your software catches these errors before submission and rejects the invoice locally, or submits and immediately tells you if LHDN said no. False real-time validation means your software submits and marks it as 'sent' even though LHDN's API returned an error. Xero Q4 2024 update: native but partial Xero rolled out MyInvois support in October 2024. The integration is native—no third-party plugins—and it does speak directly to LHDN's API. When we submitted our test batch, Xero validated UDF codes and caught a serial number gap correctly. But there's a gap: Xero's real-time validation is good for standard invoices. Once you mix billing models—say, a retainer line item plus a usage-based line item—Xero's UDF mapping can get confused about which line belongs to which classification. We submitted an invoice with both, and Xero accepted it locally, but LHDN rejected it during asynchronous processing three hours later. Xero's UI never told the user why. The catch: Xero's dashboard doesn't surface LHDN's async rejection messages well. You have to dig into a separate compliance report. For teams with low submission volume, this is fine. For anyone invoicing 20+ customers a month, you'll miss rejections. Zoho Books: partial support, workaround required Zoho has announced MyInvois support, but as of late 2024, it's limited to basic invoices. When we tested our mixed-rate invoice in Zoho, the platform refused to submit it—not because LHDN would reject it, but because Zoho's own pre-validation doesn't yet handle multi-rate line items. This is actually safer (you can't submit something broken), but it also means you can't use Zoho for complex billing scenarios in Malaysia without a workaround. Zoho's roadmap includes full UDF mapping, but it's not here yet. Teams relying on Zoho are either keeping a secondary manual process for mixed-rate invoices or waiting for the next update. Neither is ideal if you're onboarding clients this month. Wave: no native MyInvois support Wave does not currently support MyInvois or LHDN submission at all. If you're using Wave in Malaysia, you have to export your invoice data and submit through a separate portal or third-party tool. This adds a step where data can get corrupted or fall out of sync. Wave is excellent for small teams elsewhere, but it's not a contender for Malaysia compliance in 2024. Orin: native real-time validation with UDF lockdown and rejection feedback Orin's invoicing module includes native MyInvois support with a different design philosophy: UDF codes are locked at the product level, not set on a per-invoice basis. When you create a service or product in Orin, you assign its LHDN classification once. Every invoice line using that product inherits the right UDF code automatically. When we submitted our test batch through Orin, it validated in real-time: serial numbers were checked, UDF codes were locked, and LHDN's API response came back with a clear pass/fail. If LHDN rejected a line item, Orin displayed the reason in the invoice detail view and prevented resubmission until it was fixed. The mixed-rate invoice that stumped Zoho and confused Xero passed cleanly through Orin because the
