Malaysia's e-Invoice system—MyInvois—isn't a future nice-to-have anymore. The Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) has been rolling out phase-gated enforcement for months, and most businesses will hit mandatory submission by the end of 2024. If your invoicing software doesn't integrate natively with LHDN's MyInvois API, you're either manually generating XML files, juggling a third-party bridge, or risking non-compliance fines that dwarf the cost of switching. We tested the major platforms most Malaysian SMBs actually use—Xero, Zoho Books, Wave, FreshBooks, and Orin—against LHDN's published MyInvois API requirements and real submission workflows. The results are stark: native compliance exists, but it's not where you'd expect it. What MyInvois actually requires LHDN's MyInvois system doesn't just ask for prettier invoices. It demands: Real-time XML submission to LHDN's API for all qualifying invoices (generally RM100k+ annual turnover, with phase-in for smaller businesses). Unique invoice identification (invoice number + date) tied to the document itself—not just internal numbering. Correct tax classification : Standard Rate (6%), Exemption, Service, or Out of Scope, coded correctly in the submission payload. Supplier and customer NRIC/BRN validation before submission. LHDN will reject invoices where the buyer's tax ID doesn't match their registry. Audit trail : cancellations, corrections, and resubmissions must be tracked separately and re-submitted with reason codes. Real-time feedback : your software must parse LHDN's API response, flag failures, and prompt resubmission or correction. The last two points trip up most platforms. A software that can export XML isn't the same as software that can submit, monitor, and correct in real time. Xero: native API integration, but with gaps Xero announced MyInvois support in mid-2024 and has rolled it out in phases. The integration is native —invoices auto-submit to LHDN as you create them (or on a schedule, depending on your settings). What works: Real-time submission to LHDN's API without leaving Xero. Tax code mapping (Xero's SST codes align with LHDN's standard-rate and exemption categories). Cancellations and corrections resubmit automatically. Audit log ties invoice changes to LHDN submission status. What doesn't: NRIC/BRN validation isn't upstream in Xero. If a customer's tax ID is invalid or mismatched, LHDN rejects the invoice—and Xero flags it but doesn't automatically halt submission or suggest corrections. You'll need a human to fix the contact record and resubmit. Threshold rules are manual . Xero won't automatically exempt invoices under the phased-in threshold if you change your business category. You'll reconfigure tax codes each quarter if LHDN adjusts eligibility. Multi-currency invoices are problematic. If you invoice in SGD or USD to Malaysian customers, Xero will still try to submit to MyInvois (since the customer is in Malaysia), but LHDN's API has spotty support for non-MYR invoices. You may need to issue a revised MYR invoice or manually exclude the submission. Cost: from AUD $15/month for Xero standard, plus AUD $10/month per additional user. MyInvois submission is included; no extra module fee. Zoho Books: partial integration via third-party bridge Zoho Books does not have a native MyInvois API integration—yet. Instead, Zoho recommends using a third-party bridge (typically Vertex or local Malaysia-specific partners ) to convert Zoho invoices and submit them to LHDN. What works: If you set up a certified bridge, invoices will eventually reach LHDN without manual XML editing. Zoho's tax code system is flexible enough to map to LHDN's categories (though it's not automatic). Cost is lower if you stay in Zoho for invoicing and only use the bridge for LHDN submission. What doesn't: No native submission . Every invoice has to be synced from Zoho to the bridge, then to LHDN. If the bridge goes down, you have a gap; LHDN doesn't see your invoices in real time. Correction lag . If an invoice is rejected by LHDN, you'll find out via the bridge's dashboard, not Zoho's. You'll fix it in Zoho, but resubmission may take hours or a manual trigger. Bridge costs add up . Vertex and other certified bridges typically charge 0.5–2% of invoice value or a flat monthly fee (RM 200–500+), which can exceed the savings from using Zoho in the first place if you invoice frequently. Audit trail is fragmented . LHDN's submission record lives in the bridge's system, not in Zoho. Your finance team will need to cross-reference two dashboards to understand the full lifecycle of an invoice. Cost: from RM 39/month for Zoho Books, plus RM 200–500+/month for bridge. Total: RM 239–539/month before invoicing volume. Wave: no MyInvois support, likely won't add it Wave is free in most regions but has zero MyInvois integration . LHDN submission will require manual XML generation or a third-party tool that pulls data from Wave and resubmits it. The harsh math: If you're a Malaysian business wit
