A customer visits your site, chats with your widget about a billing issue, navigates to another page, then gets disconnected. The agent who picks up the conversation doesn't see the previous chat. They ask the same questions. The customer repeats themselves. Frustration spikes. That's context loss—and it happens more often than most embedded chat vendors admit. We tested Intercom, Drift, and Orin's embedded chat widgets across four scenarios: conversation persistence during page navigation, CRM data availability in the widget, time gaps between messages, and handoff to live agents. The results show where each platform breaks—and which one actually keeps the full picture. The context loss problem: what actually matters Context loss happens in three places. First, when a customer navigates between pages, the widget sometimes resets or loses the conversation thread. Second, when CRM data (order history, account status, past tickets) doesn't reach the widget, the agent starts blind. Third, when there's a time gap—the customer closes the browser, comes back an hour later—the previous conversation either disappears or exists only in a separate history the agent has to hunt for. We measured this by: Starting a conversation, navigating to 5 different pages, and checking if the thread remained intact. Checking whether customer attributes from the CRM appeared in the widget before a live agent joined. Closing the widget, waiting 30 minutes, reopening it, and logging whether the old conversation was accessible and visible by default. Handing off to a live agent and noting whether they saw the full chat history without requiring a manual pull. Context loss doesn't just annoy customers. It extends resolution time by 40–60% because agents re-explain context or ask repeat questions. For teams handling 50+ daily chats, that adds up to 15–20 lost hours per month. Intercom: persistent within session, weak on CRM sync Intercom's embedded widget maintains conversation history as long as the session is active. You can navigate across your entire site and the chat thread stays visible in the sidebar. That's good. Where Intercom falters: CRM data. Intercom has its own contact database, but if your primary CRM is Salesforce, HubSpot, or Pipedrive, syncing customer attributes to the widget is manual or requires custom API calls. We tested a live scenario where a customer with three previous tickets tried to open support. The widget showed a blank profile. The agent had to search Intercom's history separately, then cross-reference Salesforce for order data. That added three minutes to the handoff alone. Time gap handling: After closing the browser for 30 minutes, Intercom does show the previous conversation thread when the visitor reopens the widget—but it's labeled "Previous conversations" and requires the user to click to expand it. New agents don't always check. We saw agents ask repeat questions even though the data was there. Intercom works well if your team lives inside Intercom. If your CRM is the source of truth elsewhere, you're building integration work into your support workflow. Drift: fast responses, fragile memory across pages Drift's widget is fast. Initial load time averaged 400ms. Conversation speed feels snappy, and the UX is clean. Drift also offers better CRM integrations out of the box—Salesforce, HubSpot, and Pipedrive connections are native, and we saw customer attributes (name, email, company, last interaction date) appear in the widget sidebar. The critical failure: page navigation. We started a conversation, navigated to a different page, and the chat thread was visible but truncated. The full message history existed only if you clicked "View conversation history." Customers don't always do that. More importantly, when a live agent joined, they didn't see the previous page's context in the default view—they had to click into the history tab. We observed agents skipping that step 3 out of 5 times in testing, leading to repeat questions. Time gaps are handled better than Intercom. Drift stores conversation history per visitor ID and shows it prominently on return. But the handoff to live agents still requires manual context gathering on the agent's side. Drift is strong if your team is disciplined about clicking into conversation history. It's weaker if you need automatic context propagation to agents without extra steps. Orin: full context by default, CRM-native persistence Orin's embedded chat widget (built into the AI website chat product ) maintains full conversation context across page navigation. The thread stays visible, and the full history is accessible to agents on handoff without extra clicks. We navigated across 7 pages; the conversation never fragmented. CRM integration is direct.
